"U" is for Upstairs Hallway Makeover

diy hallway makeover planked walls

Today I'm sharing the upstairs hallway and backstairs makeover.  I've been slowly making my way through our home room by room and after living here for 1 1/2 years I'm finally giving some attention to some of those in-between spaces.

Most recently I tackled the back stairs leading to the upstairs hallway because, as you can tell from the before pictures above, they needed a little love.  Worn, grungy and dark, these stairs are the preferred route up to the kids bedrooms and weren't very enticing (we have a front stairs too but it's out of the way).

Some fresh paint, some stripped paint and a new railing and it's magical once again.  (Funny what a $5 new return vent cover can do for appearances.)

"P" is for Pincushion with Wood Base

diy quilted pincushion with wood base

quilted pincushion with wood base

This is one project I've been thinking about for a long time and finally put myself to the task while feeling quite under the weather this week to do much of anything else.

Raid your fabric scraps to make the cutest pincushion and then I'll show you how to attach it to a solid 4x4 wood base for stability and weight.  Anytime you can combine fabric and wood in a project is a win / win in my book!

The finished size on the squares is 3/4" but the whole pincushion measures about 4" square and just over 2" tall.

I posted these in my etsy shop here but I show you how to make your own down below.

"H" is for Heart Wall Art

Another Valentine's Day themed project today and one that's easy for kids to do too!

diy fabric collage heart wall art

I cut out a heart shape from 3/4" plywood but you could easily purchase one of those heart shaped frames that are precut at Michaels (and I think only $1) and do this same project.

Cut plywood edges are my favorite because it shows the layers of the pressed wood sandwich.  And use all your cute fabric scraps for this one, my squares are 1" but any size will work.

"C" is for Chore Chart

diy chore chart

diy chore chart replica

Also known as the Order of Indoor Duties for Children.  Isn't it great!?  I made this wall art for the upstairs hallway where all the kids bedrooms are located.

Orchard House order of indoor duties

My wall art is a replica of the historical document above written in 1846 which lists the rules for daily life and the schedule which was followed by the homeschooled Alcott girls.  The document is hung on display in the parents bedroom at Orchard House in Concord, MA and you can purchase a print in the gift shop.  If you're a Little Women fan and in the area you should definitely stop by!

I've had a bug about using leather scraps lately and finally figured out a way to incorporate them into wall art.

Leather, wood and rope are a few of my favorite things and I put them altogether to make these wood wall banners.

My kid's bathroom finally got a well deserved makeover and we are loving every inch of it!  Come see for yourself how I kept myself busy during the holiday break - it was totally worth it.

bathroom makeover before pictures

You can see from the before picture I wanted to get rid of the wallpaper, paint the trim and moulding, bulk up the mirror and replace the sconces.

diy candy free valentines ideas

Valentine's Day is fast approaching and every year I try to come up with handmade valentines for my kids classmates that don't involve candy.  I know for certain there will be tons of candy given out so I aim to make a valentine that's candy free.

"W" is for Wood Block Chandelier

diy wood block chandelier

diy wood block chandelier kids party

A crazy, fun and colorful centerpiece for any occasion!  I made this wood block centerpiece from scrap 2x2 wood pieces and clear monofilament.  Although this little gem happens to be from my kids Christmas table I figured it's a versatile piece that could definitely be used for other events too.

I painted the blocks different bold colors I had on hand.  Of course you could change up the colors, use different stains or even go natural.

This is an easy, inexpensive way to add color, height and a visual centerpiece to any table setting.  And bonus it doesn't block anyone's view of people across the table!
